New science on what we're eating- Since the guidelines were first released in 1980, some recommendations have remained fairly constant, but changes have popped up over the years in response to science, politics or pressure from the food industry.
David Hyche went above and beyond to make sure his daughter, who is visually impaired, have a great easter. He made eggs that would beep, so she could still have fun during an easter egg hunt. He got the idea online, and found a way to make it cheaper, and be a true hero to his 19 month old daughter.
Algae: The New Antibiotic- Most people know algae as green slimy type substance that is possibly gross looking. In the science world scientists have figured out a way to better utilize algae for uses such as biofuels, air purifiers and electricity. Some scientists are taking out bet glucan out of the algae and using it as a support to the immune system and as an alternative to antibiotics.

Research will focus on reducing cross-contamination of fresh produce. The University of California Davis recently won a grant to eliminate the problem of cross-contamination in fresh produce. Davis will be the lead institution with Rutgers University and Drexel University for the $4.8 million grant over five years. In the past couple of years problems with pathogens on spinach and green onions have killed consumers.
