Kendra is the sales department manager and her boss is concerned about the appearance of some of their sales clerks, particularly Hunter. On his right arm, Hunter is sporting a large new tattoo of a vampire with blood dripping form its mouth. Kendra agrees some customers might find the tattoo offensive and that he should cover it up.
When Kendra talks to Hunter about it, he becomes defensive and claims customers think his new tattoo is cool. He says he belongs to a vampire organization and this is a big part of his life now. He tells her he's also considering having his teeth filed into points. He says she is being discriminatory because another employee has a tattoo of a cross on his arm and he has not been asked to cover it. Kendra likes Hunter because he is a good employee and one of their top salespeople. She knew he was into vampire movies and books, but she had no idea about how important this was in his life. The tattoo is also violent which borders on being problematic in terms of company expectation guidelines for salespeople. What should Kendra do?
If she is uncomfortable with it, and it is bothering the customers, she really needs to get the point across about it. Maybe get long sleeved uniforms. Or tell him it may cost him his job if he doesn't start to listen to his boss.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, he should have checked in with Kendra to make sure getting a tattoo was cool with him. And the way he acted when she tried to talk to him about it, it doesn't seem like he feels bad about it. If vampires are really that important to him, then he'll give up his job for it.
ReplyDeleteI think that Kendra should just let Hunter have his tattoo and keep it uncovered. I would not talk to Hunter about it anymore as long as people do not start to complain about it and Hunter does not start to lose customers as a salesman, or start to make the store lose customers. I think that people should learn to accept people more as well and make situations like this one we are speaking of, not even a concern. If someone wants to get a certain piercing or tattoo or whatever, go for it. Whatever makes someone happy, they should do it then.
ReplyDeleteI think Kendra should tell everyone who has a tattoo to cover it and in that way everyone will be equal. She can tell the other employers that their tattoos are ok but she likes Hunter and she doesn't want to fire him, so all of them should cover their tattoos.
ReplyDeleteI think that if a co-worker has a tattoo that could effect the company, then they need to tell the employee's to cover up the tattoos when they are at work, and they can show them off when they aren't on company hours. And if they don't want to cover them, and keep refusing to cover their tattoos, then fire them, and get better employees who will listen to you about covering tattoos that risk the company getting into trouble, and draw away customers. So ask the employees to cover their tattoos, or they will get fired, and replaced.
ReplyDeleteI think he should have to check to make sure getting a tattoo was okay with him. it seems like he feels like its alright about it.
ReplyDeleteI think that Kendra should either tell all of the employees to cover up all of there tattoos or have nobody cover them. If she is really uncomfortable with it then she should really talk to him about it.
ReplyDeleteIF a worker has a tattoo that could be bad for the company they need to tel all the workers to cover the tattoos and if they dont the would probably have to leave. It should be fair to all workers.
ReplyDeleteI think that if it makes other workers or customers uncomfortable she should make sure that he covers it. Or maybe change the store uniforms so that it forces him to cover it up such as gel long sleeve shirts that are mandatory to wear.
