4/28/15 Case Study (50 word min)

The Right to Know

June is a 23 year old newspaper reporter who reports on crime in Atlanta.  On her way to work one day, she recognized several police officers hanging around her neighborhood.  She had interviewed some of them before and figured that, because they weren't in uniform, they must be on an undercover operation.  She called Karen, her source in the police department, who told her that a serial rapist had been striking in that neighborhood and there had already been five victims.  Karen also told her that if she reported on the sting, the rapist could be tipped off and skip town.  He might go to another city and attack more women.

June knows that if she reported the sting, no cop in the city would ever speak to her again.  But she also knows that women in her community are in imminent danger and feels that someone has to warn them.  What should June do?

  1. June should stay calm. She needs to do as the officers say and not report it. There is more of a chance of them catching the man, other than it happening again. She just needs to be patient, and be careful around Atlanta. The officers will fix the problem, and when it is over, she can report it, and put it in her paper.

  2. I think June should wait until the officers are done with that. She should be careful and just wait. After the officers are done and catch the man, she can report it. If she doesn't do that, she can lose her job and maybe other women in other city will be attack by this man and she would regret.

  3. I think June should follow the advise given by her source, she is not a policewomen. She knows that her community is in danger but she sees that the police in already aware of it and taking care of it, if the rapist skip town, nothing say that he wont come back anyway.

  4. If I were June I would not report about the serial rapist in the paper. I would actually tell my friends and make sure that they tell their friends about this person and to be careful about where you go and when you go. I would make sure that they know that the police are working on the case and prefer that the story not go on the news or the paper or else could possibly skip town.

  5. I think June should at least say something about it. She doesn't have to report about it, but at least talk to the women and police about it.

  6. I think that June should say something to somebody, so that she can at least get the word out about this problem, and if the police have trouble with this then oh well, at least she got the word out.

  7. I think that June needs to let the officers do their job. They obviously know the dangers of the serial rapist and they are doing their best to get him, but with her reporting it, it is going to cause a lot of stress on all the women of the neighborhood which will only hinder the case even more because the police station is going to get bombarded with concerned calls. It's best for her to keep calm, and let the police do their thing.

  8. June just needs to calm down and listen to the officers. They know what they are doing so she can not freak out. She needs to let them do their job they know what they are doing and she should not report it. And reporting it could put other women and danger. So she just needs to stay calm and live her life like everything is fine so she doesn't tip of the rapists.
