5/6/15 Wednesday Case Study (50 word min)

CJ is a data analyst for a major casino and has to work after normal business hours to finish an important project.  He realizes he is missing data that was sent to his coworker Dane.  Recently, CJ noticed Dane typing his password and learned what it is.  He decides to log into Dane's computer and resend the data to himself.

Upon doing so, CJ sees an open e-mail to a local sports book regarding gambling bets Dane placed over the last several days.  CJ knows all casino employees are forbidden to engage in gambling activities to avoid any hint of conflict of interest.  He knows he should report this but would have to admit to violating the company's information technology regulations by logging into Dane's computer.  If he warns Dane to stop his betting, he would also have to reveal the source of his information.  Dane would know he used his password.  What does CJ do in this situation?

  1. If I was CJ I would not tell anyone for the sake of my own job. I would just do without the missing data and tell the boss the next day that I am missing some data and that it is from Dane. I think the boss then could see that Dane is not doing his best at work and look at his e-mails and see that he is gambling and such. I think CJ then would be safe and not have the chance of losing his job.

  2. I don't really know what to do for this one....

CJ should casually ask Dane if he does any gambling. If he says no, agree and don't do anything. If he says yes, tell him to knock it off. If he admits to breaking into Dane's computer, he could also get himself into trouble. CJ should be ashamed of the stunt he pulled, and should have asked permission to get onto Dane's computer.

  3. CJ should just ask him, if he is doing any gambling, and get him to stop if he is, and if he isn't then just leave it at that. Also if he admits to breaking into Dane's computer he could also get into trouble from the company.CJ should be ashamed of the stunts he is pulling at the work environment, and should have got permission to be on Dane's computer first.

  4. If I was Cj I would ask him if he is doing gambling. And if he is he needs to stop. And if he broke into danes computer he shouldnt be happy about that that is wrong. and he should ask.

  5. I think that CJ needs to confess to Dane what he has done, and confront him about it. He should tell him why he did what he did, what he found out, and why he is talking to him now. Maybe then Dane could explain himself, and get back to a point where they could recover the money and such. CJ shouldn't let Dane get away with gambling, but since he did something wrong as well he needs to be prepared to face the consequences of his own actions.

  6. I think that CJ shouldn't say anything about it unless it becomes really bad. I think that he should talk to Dane about some of the information he hasn't been getting baack and ask him why?
