5/13/15 Case Study (50 word min)

Recall or Regret?

Darius is a quality assurance supervisor for an auto parts manufacturer.  He discovers a flaw in a part used in diesel engines.  He believes the flaw may not necessarily be dangerous, and he knows is could require several months of testing and re-engineering to fix.

The factory has already produced and shipped 5,000 of these parts.  Darius knows the company is in financial trouble and would be devastated if they were required to recall the parts.  A recall now could also result in the layoff of hundreds of workers.  However, its his job to ensure the parts are perfect and he can't stop thinking about it.  Even though he thinks the defect is harmless, what if it isn't?  What should Darius do?

  1. No matter what, he has to do his job. How would Darius be able to live with himself if he knew that something that could be stopped killed or seriously injured someone? Plus, he would get himself fired for not doing his job correctly. For all of these reasons he needs to think of the people who might be in harm because of it. Plus, if the parts are tested and they find out the defect won't harm the engine, then he will know that he did his job and the people of the company won't lose their job.

  2. I think Darius should tell the company about the defect and start to retest and remanufacture some of the parts. Just because some of the parts will be sent out bad does not mean all of them have to be. The people that buy some of the first ones can come back in and get it fixed and replaced. He needs to tell the company about it because that is his job. If the company does go bankrupt I am sure he can find another job somewhere else just fine.

  3. He needs to tell someone. Maybe because of his honesty and close eye, he could be rewarded. They company could get into a lot of trouble if someone where to be injured because of the product. It would be a good idea for him to tell the boss about what is going on.

  4. They should tell someone, they dont want the company to get a bad reputation, because someone got hurt using their product. he should defidently tell the boss what is going on and try to get it stopped.

  5. He should let the company know that there is a defect in the product. Because if it is harmless now it could cause major damage in the future and the company wouldn't want anyone to get hurt because of their product.
