4/28/15 Case Study (50 word min)

The Right to Know

June is a 23 year old newspaper reporter who reports on crime in Atlanta.  On her way to work one day, she recognized several police officers hanging around her neighborhood.  She had interviewed some of them before and figured that, because they weren't in uniform, they must be on an undercover operation.  She called Karen, her source in the police department, who told her that a serial rapist had been striking in that neighborhood and there had already been five victims.  Karen also told her that if she reported on the sting, the rapist could be tipped off and skip town.  He might go to another city and attack more women.

June knows that if she reported the sting, no cop in the city would ever speak to her again.  But she also knows that women in her community are in imminent danger and feels that someone has to warn them.  What should June do?

4/23/15 Thursday Case Study 4/23/15

Kendra is the sales department manager and her boss is concerned about the appearance of some of their sales clerks, particularly Hunter.  On his right arm, Hunter is sporting a large new tattoo of a vampire with blood dripping form its mouth.  Kendra agrees some customers might find the tattoo offensive and that he should cover it up.

When Kendra talks to Hunter about it, he becomes defensive and claims customers think his new tattoo is cool.  He says he belongs to a vampire organization and this is a big part of his life now.  He tells her he's also considering having his teeth filed into points.  He says she is being discriminatory because another employee has a tattoo of a cross on his arm and he has not been asked to cover it.  Kendra likes Hunter because he is a good employee and one of their top salespeople.  She knew he was into vampire movies and books, but she had no idea about how important this was in his life.  The tattoo is also violent which borders on being problematic in terms of company expectation guidelines for salespeople.  What should Kendra do?

4/16/15 Case Study (50 word min)

One of Mara's responsibilities is to keep the supply cabinets stocked at work.  She shops for coffee and janitorial supplies and orders office supplies as needed.  Kristin needed to restock the paper towels in the ladies' room, so she borrowed Mara's key.  At the end of the day, as Mara walked to her car to go home, she remembered she forgot to get the cabinet keys back from Kristin.  She realized she would need them early in the morning to set up for a meeting.

She went back inside and found Kristin gathering supplies from the cabinet.  She had collected several binders, packages of pens, and mechanical pencils, highlighters and spiral-bound notebooks.  When Kristin saw Mara, she was startled.  She explained she had been working so late the past week that she was unable to pick up school supplies for her kids, and school was starting tomorrow.  Mara didn't know what to say.  She knows Kristin works extra hours and doesn't ask for compensation, but does that make it OK to take supplies from work?  Mara's employer entrusted her with the keys and made her responsible for supplies.  What should Mara do?

Friday 4/10/15 Case Study (50 word min)

Rita has been at her new position for a little over a year.  She's worked very hard and put in lots of extra hours to do an excellent job.  She wants to make a good impression with Bella and Sydney, the other two people in her department, by sharing the workload and being a team player.  Lately when she stops by Bella's desk, she finds her Internet shopping for clothing, researching homes for sale or exploring possible vacations.  Rita has also become aware of how much time Bella spends socializing with employees from other departments.  As the new person Rita has been so buried with the amount of work Bella and Syndey assign her that she's never noticed this before.

At the department meeting this morning, Sydney announced their department would be responsible for a new project.  She would not be able to take it on because she was completely swamped.  Bella quickly agreed and suggested Rita should be the one responsible because she is so talented.  Rita is already putting in a 50-hour week and does more than her share.  What should Rita do?

Thursday 4/9/15 Case Study (50 word min)

Sarah works with a great group of guys who have become like brothers to her.  They have a professional yet fun relationship.  They occasionally joke, tease, and play small practical jokes, but is has been a respectful environment.  Recently, Aaron was hired and things have changed.  Aaron is young and talented and having lots of fun at work.  He enjoys the joking and pranks but doesn't seem to know when he's crossed the line.  His jokes now include crude and vulgar references that have become outright offensive.  They are sexually explicit and particularly degrading and disrespectful to women.

As times, the other guys seem to think he's hilarious, and at times they groan at how disgusting he is.  When Sarah tries to let Aaron know how she feels about his comments, he responds with, "Oh, sorry, I keep forgetting there's a chick working here," or, "it was only a joke!"  Sarah is starting to feel uncomfortable at work and tries to avoid Aaron.  She loves her job and her "brothers" who work there, but she's wondering if she should start looking for a new job.  What should Sara do?
