5/12/15 Case Study Response (50 word min)

Hands off, Please

Ava loves her new job.  Recently, her supervisor, Keith, has been making her feel very uncomfortable.  In spite of her objections, Keith finds ways to get physically close to her, brushing lightly agains her or playfully cornering her in a room.  On one occasion, while Ava was dispensing mail in the mailroom, Keith quietly entered the room and snapped her bra strap.  Ava was so shocked she didn't respond.

She really needs this job and doesn't want to anger her supervisor.  She often laughs off his advances and tells him her boyfriend would not like this.  She doesn't have a boyfriend but is hoping Keith might take the hint.  She is starting to feel anxiety about going to work and worries about getting trapped along with Keith.  She is also hesitant to confront Keith's supervisor for fear of this response.  What should Ava do?

5/13/15 Case Study (50 word min)

Recall or Regret?

Darius is a quality assurance supervisor for an auto parts manufacturer.  He discovers a flaw in a part used in diesel engines.  He believes the flaw may not necessarily be dangerous, and he knows is could require several months of testing and re-engineering to fix.

The factory has already produced and shipped 5,000 of these parts.  Darius knows the company is in financial trouble and would be devastated if they were required to recall the parts.  A recall now could also result in the layoff of hundreds of workers.  However, its his job to ensure the parts are perfect and he can't stop thinking about it.  Even though he thinks the defect is harmless, what if it isn't?  What should Darius do?

5/6/15 Wednesday Case Study (50 word min)

CJ is a data analyst for a major casino and has to work after normal business hours to finish an important project.  He realizes he is missing data that was sent to his coworker Dane.  Recently, CJ noticed Dane typing his password and learned what it is.  He decides to log into Dane's computer and resend the data to himself.

Upon doing so, CJ sees an open e-mail to a local sports book regarding gambling bets Dane placed over the last several days.  CJ knows all casino employees are forbidden to engage in gambling activities to avoid any hint of conflict of interest.  He knows he should report this but would have to admit to violating the company's information technology regulations by logging into Dane's computer.  If he warns Dane to stop his betting, he would also have to reveal the source of his information.  Dane would know he used his password.  What does CJ do in this situation?

4/28/15 Case Study (50 word min)

The Right to Know

June is a 23 year old newspaper reporter who reports on crime in Atlanta.  On her way to work one day, she recognized several police officers hanging around her neighborhood.  She had interviewed some of them before and figured that, because they weren't in uniform, they must be on an undercover operation.  She called Karen, her source in the police department, who told her that a serial rapist had been striking in that neighborhood and there had already been five victims.  Karen also told her that if she reported on the sting, the rapist could be tipped off and skip town.  He might go to another city and attack more women.

June knows that if she reported the sting, no cop in the city would ever speak to her again.  But she also knows that women in her community are in imminent danger and feels that someone has to warn them.  What should June do?

4/23/15 Thursday Case Study 4/23/15

Kendra is the sales department manager and her boss is concerned about the appearance of some of their sales clerks, particularly Hunter.  On his right arm, Hunter is sporting a large new tattoo of a vampire with blood dripping form its mouth.  Kendra agrees some customers might find the tattoo offensive and that he should cover it up.

When Kendra talks to Hunter about it, he becomes defensive and claims customers think his new tattoo is cool.  He says he belongs to a vampire organization and this is a big part of his life now.  He tells her he's also considering having his teeth filed into points.  He says she is being discriminatory because another employee has a tattoo of a cross on his arm and he has not been asked to cover it.  Kendra likes Hunter because he is a good employee and one of their top salespeople.  She knew he was into vampire movies and books, but she had no idea about how important this was in his life.  The tattoo is also violent which borders on being problematic in terms of company expectation guidelines for salespeople.  What should Kendra do?

4/16/15 Case Study (50 word min)

One of Mara's responsibilities is to keep the supply cabinets stocked at work.  She shops for coffee and janitorial supplies and orders office supplies as needed.  Kristin needed to restock the paper towels in the ladies' room, so she borrowed Mara's key.  At the end of the day, as Mara walked to her car to go home, she remembered she forgot to get the cabinet keys back from Kristin.  She realized she would need them early in the morning to set up for a meeting.

She went back inside and found Kristin gathering supplies from the cabinet.  She had collected several binders, packages of pens, and mechanical pencils, highlighters and spiral-bound notebooks.  When Kristin saw Mara, she was startled.  She explained she had been working so late the past week that she was unable to pick up school supplies for her kids, and school was starting tomorrow.  Mara didn't know what to say.  She knows Kristin works extra hours and doesn't ask for compensation, but does that make it OK to take supplies from work?  Mara's employer entrusted her with the keys and made her responsible for supplies.  What should Mara do?

Friday 4/10/15 Case Study (50 word min)

Rita has been at her new position for a little over a year.  She's worked very hard and put in lots of extra hours to do an excellent job.  She wants to make a good impression with Bella and Sydney, the other two people in her department, by sharing the workload and being a team player.  Lately when she stops by Bella's desk, she finds her Internet shopping for clothing, researching homes for sale or exploring possible vacations.  Rita has also become aware of how much time Bella spends socializing with employees from other departments.  As the new person Rita has been so buried with the amount of work Bella and Syndey assign her that she's never noticed this before.

At the department meeting this morning, Sydney announced their department would be responsible for a new project.  She would not be able to take it on because she was completely swamped.  Bella quickly agreed and suggested Rita should be the one responsible because she is so talented.  Rita is already putting in a 50-hour week and does more than her share.  What should Rita do?

Thursday 4/9/15 Case Study (50 word min)

Sarah works with a great group of guys who have become like brothers to her.  They have a professional yet fun relationship.  They occasionally joke, tease, and play small practical jokes, but is has been a respectful environment.  Recently, Aaron was hired and things have changed.  Aaron is young and talented and having lots of fun at work.  He enjoys the joking and pranks but doesn't seem to know when he's crossed the line.  His jokes now include crude and vulgar references that have become outright offensive.  They are sexually explicit and particularly degrading and disrespectful to women.

As times, the other guys seem to think he's hilarious, and at times they groan at how disgusting he is.  When Sarah tries to let Aaron know how she feels about his comments, he responds with, "Oh, sorry, I keep forgetting there's a chick working here," or, "it was only a joke!"  Sarah is starting to feel uncomfortable at work and tries to avoid Aaron.  She loves her job and her "brothers" who work there, but she's wondering if she should start looking for a new job.  What should Sara do?

Thursday 4/2/15 Case Study (50 word min)

Mike landed his dream job a year ago.  He's doing what he loves and works with a great group of people.  His employer and coworkers seems very pleased with him, his work ethic, and the quality of his work.  He has earned an excellent reputation.  He was excited last week when another position opened up and he helped his friend, Anthony, get hired, too.  But after only a week, Mike is starting to wonder if he did the right thing by providing such a strong recommendation for Anthony.  By the end of the first week, Anthony started coming in a few minutes late, taking extra long breaks and texting his girlfriend throughout the day.  Anthony isn't taking his training seriously, and Mike has been covering for him.  Mike is disappointed in Anthony's lack of effort and is starting to feel Anthony is abusing their friendship.  He is hoping his friend's poor performance doesn't reflect badly on him.  Mike has tried to talk to Anthony, but he just laughs it off and teases him for being a "company man."  What should Mike do?

Rosa recently issued a reminder to her employees about non-smoking areas.  She reminded them about the dangers of smoking in the warehouse vicinity where highly flammable and combustible materials are stored.  She also reminded them about the small fire that broke out in the warehouse several years ago.  She explained that smoking areas are designated outside the buildings for use during breaks.  For several weeks after the reminder, Justin noticed the smell of cigarette smoke every time he went out to the warehouse.  He also noticed that Tami makes an unusual number of daily trips out to the warehouse area.  He knows she is a smoker but never sees her use the designated smoking areas.  Justin decided to ask Tami why she never used the break area outside.  She told him its too cold out there in the winter and too hot in the summer.  Justin enjoys working with Tami and she is valued employee, but he's concerned about his safety at work.  What should Justin do?

Logan is a great supervisor and well respected by his coworkers.  Several months ago, he hired Danielle.  It was obvious he liked her as more than a colleague from the beginning.  He was very flirtatious and gave her extra attention during training.  He was always there to rescue her or make excuses when she made a mistake.  Now they are a couple and growing increasingly more affectionate at work.  They sometimes disappear at break time and no one knows where they are.  Even though Danielle is the newest hire, Logan givers her the preferred work schedule, most desirable days off and preferential treatment.  Logan has been distracted on the job and is making mistakes affecting his coworkers.  His coworkers are getting annoyed, and morale is going down.  They have asked Michaela, another co-worker, to talk to Logan because she is his friend.  Michaela had a crush on Logan in the past and wonders if he would actually listen to her or just think she's jealous.  What should Michaela do?

Harmless Request?

Gina Marie was recently hired to work as a receptionist for the front lobby.  The company she works for prefers that new hires start at reception and then work their way up.  As a receptionist, she is also responsible for making copies for company associates.  Her friend Bryson stopped by the office during his lunch break to ask her to make 300 copies for him for a college project.  he waited until the last minute to do this and needs them this afternoon.  he brought a package of printer paper from home, but she would still be using the company copier and company time to get it done.  If Bryson doesn't get the copies, he will fail this project.  The company copier does not require a security key, nor do they keep track of the copies made by departments.

What should Gina Marie do?

Friday 11/16/15 Case Study (50 word min)

The Case of the Unproductive Employee

As the Director of Student Programs and Engagement, you are responsible for supervising six other employees . It's your second year on the job and you're feeling more and more comfortable with the responsibilities you've been given . You were blessed to have a pretty strong team to supervise and you all get along pretty well . The only weak spot in the team is your coordinator for Intramurals, Kimiko .

Kimiko has a great attitude and genuinely loves the work she does, but there are some things she just doesn't seem to "get ." She is regularly late with her monthly reports, she oftentimes loses receipts for the supplies that she buys, she's not usually on time for meetings, and on more than one occasion you've needed to confront her lack of professional boundaries with student employees . She is always apologetic when you talk to her about these things and she promises to change, but there hasn't been much improvement in the last year .

Things have gotten to the point that you feel it is time to "let Kimiko go" and find a new Coordinator . When you speak to your supervisor about her, he disagrees with you and says it's your job as Kimiko's supervisor to help her grow in these areas . When you try to explain all the work you've done investing in her, it becomes apparent that you're probably not going to win this discussion .

This is your first major discussion with your supervisor on evaluating talent and you want him to have confidence in your ability to supervise well . If you help Kimiko improve, it may make your evaluation of her seem premature and wrong . On the other hand, if you don't help Kimiko get better, you're going to be stuck with her problematic behavior for at least another year .

> What would you do?

Tuesday 1/6/15 Case Study (50 word min)

The Case of the Overnight Guest

It has come to your attention that some female students in an on campus house have invited a homeless woman to live with them . While there are four bedrooms in the apartment, only three of them were occupied prior to their guest, Cindy, moving in about a week ago .

When confronted about it, the students tell you that they asked their roommates and everyone said it was a great opportunity to serve someone in need . They tell you that they are aware of the overnight guest policy and are more than willing to pay the $15 charge per night for housing her .

They have become good friends with Cindy and feel she is very close to finding a job and turning her life around . She just needed a little bit of help to get over the last few hurdles . They have been in contact with various homeless shelters in the area and have been able to find some long-term support for Cindy once the school year ends in a month . The students want Cindy to live with them through the end of the semester and don't see what the big deal is .

Click on the link below to get to the Morning Ag Clips for the week.  THERE SHOULD BE NO MORE THEN 3 REVIEWS PER ARTICLE.  Therefore, those that complete the posts first should not have a problem.  If you wait, you will need to make sure that you select an article that has not already been "reviewed" 3 times already.  This should help the class learn from more then just a couple articles each week.  When you make your response, make sure that you designate clearly which article you and reviewing.

HINT:  Do your's ASAP so you can do the articles that most interest you!

Don't forget to to an article for Thursday and another one for Friday!
