The Case of the National Spotlight
Your men's soccer team has had quite a season . While they came into the season ranked #9 nationally, they won some close games and moved up to #2 with only one loss on the season . Going into the last weekend, four days before they were supposed to leave for the national tournament, a lot of the team decided to go to a party . The party was at an off-campus house and the hosts made sure that alcohol was in no short supply .Things quickly got out of hand and in the end, the police were called to break up the party .
Details are pretty fuzzy, but in the end, 43 students were cited for underage drinking, nine students went to the hospital because of alcohol poisoning, and one student died from injuries sustained while falling off of a balcony . He was too drunk to catch his balance once he started to fall .
When interviewed by the media, the soccer coach insisted that his players who were there are good boys that made a bad choice . When asked if he would cancel the trip to the National tournament, the coach responded by saying, "Are you crazy? We earned that trip and we're not gonna let this stop us from our goals ." While the coach would later admit the timing of the statement was unfortunate, his comments have nonetheless led to a media frenzy focused on entitled student athletes who are "Above the Law ."
The Board of Trustees has convened an emergency meeting to discuss what should be done because this is the fourth major house party of the fall where the police needed to be called . At the time of the meeting, the team was only a day away from leaving for the tournament and it still wasn't clear how many soccer players were involved and to what extent they were involved with the party . The Board has asked you to give them a recommendation of what should be done .
> If you were President, what would you say should be done?
If I was the president I would have a meeting with the soccer team and discuss with them the dangers of drinking too much, or even drinking at all. I would then tell them that they are lucky they still get to even play in this tournament. I would maybe think about some consequences if this happens in the future again.
ReplyDeleteI would have a meeting with the team. These men need to understand that this game is a very important thing for them, and the school. They should be happy they still get the opportunity to play the game. The whole team should almost be punished, so that way, if one person decides to do something stupid, someone else on the team would try to stop him.
ReplyDeleteIf I was the president of the committee I would meet with the coach separately from the team, I would ask him if he thinks it is a good idea to go play in the tournament because of the bad choices some of the soccer players had made. Then I would have a meeting with the team to see if they think it is a good idea to go to the tournament because of the decisions they made. I would probably let them go but have consequences for them when they got back and for the future if it happens again.
ReplyDeleteI would have to call the team together and have a very serious talk about all that. If yu go to college to play a sport you have to be comitted and you cant go out and party you have to think whats best for you and your team defiantly when you are going into nationals. I think that they made a very bad choice.
ReplyDeleteI think everybody make mistake but they need to understand the importance and the danger of making stupid choice. They are very lucky to be able to go to the tournament. they need to know that the next time they won't be able to do what they want without consequences.
ReplyDeleteIf I were the president I would call all of the soccer players in to a mandatory meeting. I would then tell them in person that if they were involved in the party in any way that they were not allowed to participate in the national tournament. I would also maybe bring someone else in to talk to them about the dangers of underage drinking. They should've thought about how hard they worked to get their #2 ranking before they wasted it all away on getting wasted.
ReplyDeleteEvery one makes mistakes, but if I were the president, I would tell them that they need to realize the dangers of making such a huge mistake like that, and they are lucky that they could even go to the tournament. Also if they were willing to take this big of a risk, and throw it all away then they obviously didn't really care about it in the first place right.
ReplyDeletei would tell them that they wouldn't be able o go to the tournament because no matter if they really wanted to go they wouldn't because they were cited for underage drinking and many of them were hospitalized do to alcohol. in no way would they be in any sort of shape to be allowed into such an event
ReplyDeleteIf I were the president I would speak with the team and tell them about the dangers of drinking alcohol and ask them how important is the tournament for them and if they want to continue playing they should make good choices, or the best choices possibles.
